Professor Angela Mattie offers insight on the sale of Bristol Hospital

A Tennessee company announced Wednesday that it will buy Bristol Hospital. The company, Vanguard Health Systems Inc., is also planning a joint venture with Waterbury Hospital.

Angela Mattie, associate professor of management and chair of health care management and organizational leadership in the School of Business, is available to comment.

“Connecticut hospitals have been relatively insulated from the for-profit, large health care chains’ acquisition. However, in this era of lower reimbursements and higher health care costs, the small community hospital can no longer survive. In Connecticut, there are two options for the remaining stand alone small to mid-size acute hospitals: join one of the larger health care systems in Hartford or the southern part of the state or wait for the inevitable–an acquisition from a large, outside for-profit system.”
