School of Medicine professor: Obesity should be considered a disease

akanji-abayomiDr. Abayomi Akanji, professor of medical sciences in the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, applauded the American Medical Association’s recent decision to label obesity as a disease.

“It’s probably long overdue,” Akanji is quoting as saying in several daily Hearst Connecticut newspapers, including the Connecticut Post. “I think everyone feels strongly that obesity indeed should be considered a disease in its own right.”

Approximately 35 percent of American adults are obese, including about a quarter of the population of Connecticut, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
