Rich Hanley, associate professor and director of the graduate journalism program in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, was quoted extensively in a New Haven Register article about the importance of social media usage in the New Haven mayoral race.
“It’s an essential part of a politician’s tool kit that would be ignored at their own peril,” said Hanley.
Most people understand that it’s not always the candidate posting social media messages, Hanley said. Hanley said he thinks that it’s important that candidates are the ones who need to directly respond to questions or concerns.
“It really ought to be the candidate himself or herself responding,” Hanley said. “There needs to be a sense of authenticity and people have good radar on that.”
