Quinnipiac University will screen “If These Halls Could Talk,” a documentary film series about 11 college students and their conversations about diversity issues in higher education, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Burt Kahn Court on the Mount Carmel Campus. Lee Mun Wah, the renowned Chinese American documentary filmmaker who directed the film, will lead a discussion following the screening.

This event, sponsored by the School of EducationCollege of Arts and SciencesStudent Affairs, the Office of Multicultural and Global Education and the Albert Schweitzer Institute, is free and open to the public.

Senior awarded Critical Language Scholarship from U.S. Department of State

mark-firmaniMark Firmani, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences at Quinnipiac University, has been awarded Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to undertake intensive study of Arabic from June-August 2013 in Rabat, Morocco.

This prestigious and highly competitive scholarship, which is awarded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is part of the U.S. government’s effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages.

“I look forward to living in a Middle Eastern country, working with the people, learning the language and the nuances of culture, and returning to the United States to share what I have experienced,” Firmani said.

‘QU Dancing with the Stars’ to raise money for Camp Sunshine April 12

 

The University will host ‘QU Dancing with the Stars' on Friday, April 12, on Burt Kahn Court on the Mount Carmel Campus. Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Sunshine, an organization that provides a camp for children with serious illnesses and their families.

Quinnipiac University faculty members and administrators will dance with student members of Quinnipiac’s Ballroom Society in the competition, “QU Dancing with the Stars,” at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, April 12, on Burt Kahn Court on the Mount Carmel Campus.

The faculty and staff who will participate are: Kathy Cooke, professor of history in the College of Arts and SciencesSean Duffy, associate professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences; Robin Guisti, assistant professor in the School of Nursing; Louise Howe, director of marketing communications for admissionsWilliam Jellison, associate professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences; Thomas Martin, assistant professor of biomedical sciences in the School of Health Sciences; Gary Pandolfi, instructional technologist; Tara Rothman, adjunct professor in the School of Business; and Joseph Woods, professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The student dancers include: Nick Barrios; Joann Cazorla; Alex Diaz; Danielle Martin; Sean McCarty; Kuwabo Mubyana; Ethan Pandolfi; Jaclyn Plante; and Aidan Tatar.

Stan Rothman, professor of mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Chris Flaherty will serve as masters of ceremony.

Josh Elliott of “Good Morning America and Jessica Jackley, co-founder of KIVA, a microlending website, will address students and receive honorary degrees at the 82nd undergraduate ceremonies on Sunday, May 19. Jackley will address College of Arts and Sciences and School of Business students at our 10 a.m. ceremony. James W. McGlothlin, chairman and CEO of The United Co. and a Quinnipiac Business Leader Hall of Fame honoree, will also receive an honorary degree at the ceremony. Elliott will address School of Communications, School of Health Sciences and School of Nursing students at 3 p.m.

The Honorable Dennis G. Eveleigh, a Connecticut Supreme Court justice, will address the University’s graduating School of Law students on Sunday, May 12. He will also receive an honorary degree.

Denise D’Ascenzo, weekday anchor of WFSB-TV’s 5:30 and 6 p.m. newscasts, will address students at the university’s graduate Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 12. She will also receive an honorary degree.

Quinnipiac will once again sponsor a Commencement Fair on the Mount Carmel Campus on Monday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Piazza of the Carl Hansen Student Center. It will also be held on the North Haven Campus on Wednesday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from all offices involved in commencement will distribute caps and gowns and answer questions.

Students rehearse for the upcoming production of “Ernest In Love”

Quinnipiac University‘s Theater for Community will present the musical “Ernest In Love,” from April 25-28 in the Clarice L. Buckman Theater on the Mount Carmel Campus.

Set in Victorian England, “Ernest In Love” is a musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The plot revolves around Jack Worthing, an earnest young man who loves the aristocratic Gwendolen Fairfax. Gwendolen says she loves him, however, she thinks he is someone else. Jack’s problems multiply as he desperately tries to hold onto Gwendolen, win over her formidable mother, Lady Bracknell, and protect his young ward, Cecily Cardew, from the advances of his friend, the pleasure loving Algernon Moncrieff.

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26; at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.
